A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required to operate certain commercial motor vehicles. The type of CDL and endorsements you need depend on the vehicle you operate and the freight you transport. Some commercial vehicles, including certain hot shot setups, do not require a CDL.
Generally required for combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating or weight of 26,001 pounds or more, when the towed vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating or weight exceeding 10,000 pounds.
Generally required for single vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating or weight of 26,001 pounds or more, including certain combinations towing vehicles that do not exceed 10,000 pounds.
Vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or requiring hazardous materials placards, that do not qualify as Class A or B.
H (HazMat), N (Tank), P (Passenger), S (School Bus), T (Double/Triple).
CDL holders must self-certify their commercial driving category with their state licensing agency. Depending on the category, DOT medical certification may also be required. Keep your medical certification current when applicable, and use the Compliance Tracker to track expiration dates.
